Milkweeds for Monarch Initiative

In the summer of 2014, residents and members of the Marine Villa Neighborhood Association worked on a proposal to create Monarch Butterfly gardens at the Flag Median, Fountain and at Firehouse #3.

The group applied for a Brightside Neighbors Naturescaping grant to plant the butterfly garden, as part of the Milkweeds for Monarchs - the St. Louis Butterfly Project. The was awarded with a grant of plants designated for the project.

The St. Louis Butterfly Project, one of Mayor Francis G. Slay's sustainability initiatives to help connect people and urban nature.

The goals are to 1) increase monarch butterfly habitat and 2) help people experience the splendor of monarchs in neighborhood parks and spaces. Creating monarch gardens is also an opportunity to enhance a community's sense of place and to build relationships between neighbors.
